One of my clients went VAT registered this month so I had to set VAT up on her store so that she could get it added to the products that needed it (some were still to be zero rated). I used the steps in the UK Configuration eBook which were very easy to follow and literally took me about 10 minutes to set up. However one thing wasn’t covered and after searching around I couldn’t find the answer. The Channel Islands do not pay UK VAT however they do have UK postage! A quick question on a developer’s forum I use occassionally gave me one method to try however I’d been playing on my testing site and come up with another solution.

I simply created a new country called United Kingdom (Channel Islands) and gave it to the ISO codes of Jersey (JE and JER). This was not included in the Tax Zone but was included in the UK postage zone. A small addition then to the sign up form to inform Channel Island residents to sign up to the correct country and that was all. VAT gets charged to all UK and EU residents and not to Channel Island residents

I’ve set this blog up to write up the progress and information I come across whilst setting up a new store and also updating other stores for clients. I’m relatively new to using osCommerce so I’m not a hardcore expert but more of a native PHP user trying to learn the interface and look for contributions before hacking the code to pieces!

I have a few clients running osCommerce sites and am being asked to set up new sites as well. It’s a different challenge from the norm and despite finding annoyances with osCommerce I’m also enjoying using something different and learning new things.

So I’ll be starting off with the updates I’ve made to one clients site, helpful titbits I’ve done along the way, and also the new site we’re setting up as well, using a prebuilt template from the Templates section.
